History
Encarnita "Kany" García De Jesus, born September 25, 1982, in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter. García gained initial national recognition in 2004 as a contestant on the reality television show Objetivo Fama. Despite not winning, she is widely regarded as the most successful contestant in the show's history.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born to a Spanish father and a Puerto Rican mother, García grew up in a musically rich environment. Her father, Antonio, had left the priesthood to marry her mother, Shela. Kany, the youngest of three siblings, began her classical music education at a young age, studying cello, music theory, solfeggio, and chorus. At 13, she enrolled at the Escuela Libre de Música, where she discovered her passion for the guitar, later pursuing further studies at Puerto Rico's Conservatorio de Música.
Career Milestones and Breakthrough
García's participation in the first season of Objetivo Fama was marked by a significant car accident that forced her to withdraw from the competition. After recovering from her injuries, which resulted in limited sensation in her left toe, García focused on songwriting. She penned a song for Janina Irizarry's debut album, Todo De Mí.
In 2006, García signed with Sony BMG, releasing her debut album, Cualquier Día, in 2007. The album achieved commercial success, with four singles charting within the top 40 of the Billboard Latin Tracks. Her second studio album, Boleto De Entrada, released in 2009, reached the top five of the Billboard Latin Albums chart and featured her first US Top 20 hit, "Feliz," on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. Her work garnered critical acclaim, leading to four Latin Grammy nominations in 2008, including wins for Best Female Pop Vocal Album for Cualquier Día and Best New Artist.
