Jack Savoretti: A Journey of Resilience and Artistic Rebirth
With a distinctive husky voice, a knack for crafting memorable melodies, and compelling stories to share, Jack Savoretti possesses all the hallmarks of a seasoned artist. However, his path to artistic fulfillment was far from straightforward. Just a year prior to the release of his third album, despite having two previous records, critical acclaim, and a dedicated fanbase cultivated over five years of consistent touring, Savoretti found himself on the brink of abandoning his music career.
A Moment of Doubt and a Creative Spark
Having parted ways with his former label and management, the then 27-year-old felt deeply disillusioned with the music industry. "I was seriously thinking about giving it all up," he admits. With a recent marriage and a child on the way, Savoretti had also experienced a prolonged period without writing new songs. It was during this contemplative phase, the previous summer, that a new melody emerged. "I was thinking my career was over before it had really begun. Then this song came along and made me realise I wanted to make another album."
That pivotal song, 'Knock Knock,' became the cornerstone of 'Before the Storm,' an album featuring 13 self-penned tracks. Savoretti views this record not just as his third release, but as a profound new beginning. "For me this is like starting all over again. The first two albums came from my imagination, but for this one I have drawn on my personal experience."
'Before the Storm': An Exploration of Personal Experience
The songs on 'Before the Storm' delve into the complexities of a turbulent relationship, capturing the emotional conflict of a young man balancing newfound freedom with the commitment of love. The album offers a diverse sonic landscape, encompassing both upbeat and melancholic tracks, exploring themes of exhilarating nights out and introspective moments of darkness. What unites these diverse narratives is the raw honesty of Savoretti's lyrics and the undeniable catchiness of his melodies.
Early Life and Influences
Savoretti's background is as rich and varied as his music. The son of a Polish-German model, whose parents had escaped the Holocaust, and an Italian actor who fled his homeland due to terrorist threats, Savoretti spent his formative years moving between London, Italy, and Switzerland. His school days were marked by a sense of detachment, daydreaming out of the window, and an initial aspiration to become a professional footballer.
A significant shift in his ambitions occurred at age 16 after watching the film 'The Graduate.' Captivated by its Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack, he developed a desire to study film in California. This dream was dramatically interrupted on September 11, 2001. Savoretti recounts waking up on a plane mid-Atlantic to the sight of military jets and the news of the Pentagon and World Trade Center attacks. After a harrowing 14-hour journey from Zurich, landing in Geneva, his Californian aspirations were abruptly halted.
From Los Angeles to a Debut Album
Upon finally reaching Los Angeles, Savoretti encountered a nation in shock but found himself falling in love with the city and its vibrant music scene. Encouraged by his mother, who had connections to music legends like Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones during her modeling career, he picked up a guitar and began setting his schoolboy poetry to music. This creative outpouring led to the creation of 'Between The Minds,' his debut album. The record showcased his signature husky vocals and his talent for writing memorable tunes, earning the attention of BBC Radio 2 and leading to a European tour supporting Corinne Bailey Rae, culminating in a performance for 9,000 fans at the Hammersmith Apollo.
Navigating Industry Challenges and Finding His Sound
Despite the early success, Savoretti and his independent label faced challenges in competing with the established music industry. "It was just the wrong time for me to try to break through," he reflects. A headline tour of Caffe Nero branches across Britain helped build momentum, but his second album, 'Harder than Easy,' did not reach the audience it deserved following his departure from his initial record label.
By the spring of 2012, Savoretti was back in the studio, working on 'Before the Storm.' Recorded in just four days at KensalTown Studios and produced by Martin Terefe and The Suppliers (known for their work with artists like James Morrison and Jason Mraz), the album marked a significant milestone. "After eight years I have finally found my sound," Savoretti states. "I feel like this is my first album. The first two felt like my education and my college years, and this feels like my first real job. I sat down and decided I wanted to make a great album, where every song could stand alone and yet be part of a great album. I think we've achieved it. I am very proud of this album."
