History
Albert Lee: A Guitar Virtuoso's Journey
Albert Lee, born December 21, 1943, in Leominster, Herefordshire, England, is widely recognized as a guitarist's guitarist. His career began in the UK with Chris Farlowe & the Thunderbirds, followed by a stint with Heads Hands & Feet. Lee later relocated to the United States, where he collaborated with The Crickets and Emmylou Harris's Hot Band. The early 1980s saw him working with Eric Clapton, and he maintained a long-standing association with The Everly Brothers, performing with them for over two decades.
Early Career and International Recognition
Lee first achieved commercial success as the lead guitarist for Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds. After leaving the band in 1968, he joined Heads Hands & Feet, remaining with them until their dissolution in 1973.
Move to the US and Session Work
In 1974, Lee moved to Los Angeles, California, joining The Crickets at the invitation of bassist Rick Grech. The group recorded three albums together, including "A Long Way From Lubbock." During this period, Lee also garnered significant interest for session work. In 1976, he was invited to join Emmylou Harris's Hot Band, stepping in for one of his musical inspirations, James Burton, who was returning to perform with Elvis Presley. From 1978, Lee spent five years collaborating with Eric Clapton, contributing both guitar and vocals to a live concert recording at the Budokan in Japan.
The Everly Brothers and Solo Ventures
Lee played a pivotal role in organizing The Everly Brothers' 1983 reunion concert, serving as its musical director. His enduring connection with the duo spanned over twenty years of regular performances.
Hogan's Heroes and Continued Touring
In 1987, Gerry Hogan invited Lee to headline a steel guitar festival in Newbury, Berkshire. Initially apprehensive about fronting a band, the performance proved successful, leading to regular tours with Hogan's Heroes. A collaborative album with Hogan's Heroes, titled "Like This," was released in the spring of 2008, coinciding with their European tour. Lee continues to be active in the studio and tours frequently with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings.
