History

The Egyptian Lover: A Pioneer of West Coast Electro-Funk

The Egyptian Lover, born Greg Broussard, began his career as a DJ in Lafayette, Louisiana, before relocating to Los Angeles. In 1983, he joined forces with Unique Dreams Entertainment, which soon evolved into the influential collective Uncle Jamm's Army. Together, they organized massive early hip-hop dance parties, drawing crowds of over 10,000 people to venues like the L.A. Sports Arena and locations in Torrance.

Early Recordings and Breakthrough Hits

His initial foray into recording came in 1983 as a member of The Radio Crew. Later that year, he contributed to "Dial-A-Freak," released by Uncle Jamm's Army. The Egyptian Lover then launched his solo career, releasing the seminal single and club anthem "Egypt, Egypt" in 1984. This was followed by a string of local hits that defined the electro-funk sound, including "And My Beat Goes Boom," "What Is a DJ If He Can't Scratch," "Girls," "You're so Fine," "The Lover," "Sexy Style," "The Alesby Inn," and "Freak a Holic."

The 1990s and Beyond

Throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s, The Egyptian Lover focused on his prolific output of 12-inch singles, which were generally more popular than his full-length albums. While his 1984 LP On the Nile achieved moderate success, his album output slowed. After a hiatus in the early 1990s, he returned in 1994 with Back from the Tomb, his last full-length release for over a decade.

During this period, he also established his own record label, Egyptian Empire Records, which supported artists such as Rodney O & Joe Cooley. The Egyptian Lover's recording career saw a resurgence in 2005 with the release of the single "Party," followed by the album Platinum Pyramids in February 2006. By the end of 2006, he collaborated with Jamie Jupiter on the tracks "UFO" and "Futuristic," intended for a 2007 12-inch release. In 2006, he also worked with Warp Records artist Jimmy Edgar.

Global Touring and Legacy

Since beginning his international touring career in 2004, The Egyptian Lover has brought his distinctive DJ and performance style to clubs and arenas worldwide, continuing to perform in Europe. His enduring influence on electronic dance music and electro-funk remains significant.
