History

James Arthur (born 1988) is a British singer and songwriter who rose to prominence after winning the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012. His debut single, "Impossible," released immediately after the competition, topped the UK Singles Chart in its first week.

Arthur's musical journey began long before his television success. From 2005 onwards, he was involved in various bands as a vocalist and guitarist, including Moonlight Drive, Cue the Drama, Save Arcade, and Emerald Skye. He also pursued solo projects, forming The James Arthur Band and The James Arthur Project, and released EPs as a solo artist.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born in Middlesbrough, England, Arthur's parents, Shirley Ashworth and Neil Arthur, separated when he was two years old. His father, a former DJ and drummer, and mother eventually remarried, and for over two decades, they did not speak. Arthur's early years included living in Bahrain for four years, where he attended the British School of Bahrain. Upon returning to the UK at age 14, he continued his education and began writing and recording music seriously by age 15.

Pre-X Factor Bands and Projects:

In addition to his band work, Arthur uploaded numerous original songs to SoundCloud and YouTube, including an album titled "Sins by the Sea." He also auditioned for The Voice UK in 2011, reaching the final 200 contestants.

The X Factor Journey

Arthur auditioned for The X Factor with an acoustic version of Tulisa Contostavlos's "Young," sharing personal details about his past struggles and family estrangement. His performance impressed mentor Nicole Scherzinger, who selected him for the live shows. Despite facing challenges, including an anxiety attack and being in the bottom two, Arthur advanced through the competition. He ultimately won The X Factor on December 9, 2012, securing 53.7% of the public vote.
