Miguel Jontel Pimentel, known professionally as Miguel, is a Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer who has become a defining figure in contemporary R&B. Raised in the San Pedro community, Miguel began his career in the early 2000s, initially working with the production company Drop Squad. After declining an offer to join the R&B group Fatty Koo, he signed a solo deal with Universal, though his planned debut album, Young & Free, was never officially released. During this period, he built a reputation in the underground scene through collaborations with artists like Blu and Exile.
Miguel’s mainstream trajectory shifted in 2007 when he signed with Jive Records. He initially gained traction as a songwriter, co-writing Jaheim’s "Finding My Way Back," which earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song. He also contributed to Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond before releasing his own debut single, "All I Want Is You," in 2010. The song became a Top Ten R&B hit and served as the title track for his debut studio album, which also featured the enduring singles "Sure Thing" and "Quickie."
