Thy Catafalque emerged in 1998 in Hungary, initially rooted in traditional, epic black metal. Founded by Tamás Kátai (also known as Gire) and János Juhász, the band's early sound quickly caught the attention of KaOtic Productions. Their debut album, Sublunary Tragedies, was released in 1999, followed by Microcosmos in 2001.

Over the years, Thy Catafalque's musical direction evolved significantly, incorporating increasingly experimental elements. Deeply influenced by electronic music and the folk traditions of Central Europe, their sound became more diverse and atmospheric. Following the dissolution of KaOtic Productions, the band self-financed their third album, Tűnő Idő Tárlat (An Exhibition of Vanishing Time), released in 2004. By this point, the lyrics had shifted to Hungarian, and the music explored a broad spectrum, described as "cosmic music from micro to macro, from matter to spirit and then back into the ashes."
