Daystar Peterson, known professionally as Tory Lanez, was born in Toronto, Canada, on July 27, 1992. His parents are Sonstar Peterson and Luella Peterson. At age 11, Peterson learned of his mother's serious illness, a rare disease. Following his mother's death and with his father, an ordained minister, largely absent, Peterson became self-sufficient at 14. His father's belief in his musical aspirations was demonstrated when, at 16, he offered $10,000 if Drake listened to his music and did not like it.
Tory Lanez is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence stemming from the July 2020 shooting of fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion. His most recent project, PETERSON, released on March 7, 2025, was recorded while he was incarcerated.
