Tinariwen, a Tuareg musical collective originating from Tessalit in the Adrar des Ifoghas region spanning southern Algeria and northern Mali, crafts a unique sound deeply rooted in the desert. Their name, derived from the Tamasheq (Berber) word for "desert," reflects their nomadic heritage and the vast, open spaces that inspire their music.

Formed in 1982 under challenging circumstances, Tinariwen emerged from a generation of Kel Tamashek exiles. These young Tuareg nomads, facing hardship and repression in drought-stricken Mali, sought to preserve their ancestral musical traditions while simultaneously engaging in political struggle. This fusion of ancient sounds with contemporary political commentary defines their signature style, known as tishoumaren – the music of the ishumar (the unemployed).
