Richard Noel Marx (born September 16, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois) is a singer-songwriter renowned for his adult contemporary hits. He achieved significant chart success in the late 1980s and early 1990s with singles such as "Right Here Waiting," "Hazard," and "Hold on to the Nights." While known for his power ballads, Marx also demonstrated a flair for upbeat, classic rock-influenced tracks like "Don't Mean Nothing," "Should've Known Better," "Satisfied," and "Wait for the Sunrise." Notably, he became the first solo artist to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 of the U.S. singles charts.

Born to Dick and Ruth Marx, Richard grew up in a household with mixed religious backgrounds, his father being Jewish and his mother Christian. His father, a jingle writer for commercials and a jazz musician, inspired Marx to begin songwriting at the age of five.
