Noname: A Poet and Rapper's Journey

Fatimah Nyeema Warner, professionally known as Noname, was born on September 18, 1991, in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. She emerged as a distinctive voice in music, blending elements of poetry and rap. Her artistic journey began in 2010 with performances in slam poetry and rap.

Early Recognition and Collaborations

Noname first gained significant attention in 2013 for her contribution to "Lost," a track from Chance the Rapper's influential mixtape, Acid Rap. This collaboration marked the beginning of a series of notable features, including a verse on "Finish Line/Drown" from Chance the Rapper's 2016 mixtape, Coloring Book. Her presence was further highlighted when she appeared with Chance the Rapper on Saturday Night Live in December 2016. Beyond her work with Chance the Rapper, Noname also featured on Mick Jenkins' 2014 mixtape, The Waters, contributing to the song "Comfortable," and appeared on multiple tracks from Kirk Knight's 2015 album, Late Knight Special.

The Evolution of a Stage Name

Initially, Noname performed under the moniker "Noname Gypsy." She adopted this name as a teenager, seeing it as a reflection of a nomadic spirit, unconfined by a single space. However, in March 2016, she removed "Gypsy" from her stage name after recognizing its racial connotations and potential to offend Romani people. Explaining her decision to adopt the name "Noname," she stated in a 2016 interview with The Fader, "I try to exist without binding myself to labels. I’m not really into labels at all, even the way I dress; I usually don't wear anything with a name brand. For me, not having a name expands my creativity. I’m able to do anything. Noname could potentially be a nurse, Noname could be a screenwriter. I’m not limited to any one category of art or other existence, on a more existential level."

Debut Mixtape: Telephone

Noname released her debut mixtape, Telephone, on July 31, 2016, following three years of production. The mixtape served as a public introduction of her new stage name, with songs framed as open-ended telephone conversations. The lyrical themes of Telephone delve into the experiences of Black women, the pain they endure, and the challenges of growing up in Chicago. Initially available as a free download on Bandcamp, the mixtape was later released on vinyl in September 2017. Critically, Telephone received praise from publications like Rolling Stone, which called it "one of 2016's most thought-provoking hip-hop," and Stereogum, which noted Noname's "potency and urgency in her complicated, spoken word-esque cadences and subdued delivery." Consequence of Sound highlighted the album's "3D craft" and its diary-like quality.

Exploring Community and Gentrification

In October 2016, Noname collaborated with fellow Chicago artist Saba on the song "Church/Liquor Store." This track offered a commentary on the West Side of Chicago, examining the juxtaposition of places of worship and liquor stores, and addressing issues of gentrification and the perceived erasure of crime that accompanies it.

Second Album: Room 25

In August 2018, Noname announced her second album, Room 25, scheduled for release in the fall of that year. Recorded in approximately one month, the album reflects on the two years that passed since Telephone, a period that included her move from Chicago to Los Angeles and a brief romantic relationship. Noname described a newfound maturity on Room 25 compared to her debut, noting, "Telephone was a very PG record because I was very PG. I just hadn't had sex." Unlike Telephone, Room 25 was financed by Noname herself, using funds earned from touring and guest appearances. The album was released on September 14, 2018, and garnered critical acclaim. NME described it as "flawless" and "smartly constructed," while Rolling Stone recognized Noname as "One of the best rappers alive." Pitchfork awarded it "Best New Music," calling it "a transcendent coming-of-age tale." PopMatters characterized the album as a blend of "vintage neo-soul and future rap." Noname made her solo television debut performing a medley from Room 25 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on October 17, 2018.

Artistic Independence and Frustration

In May 2019, Noname announced her upcoming second studio album, titled Factory Baby. However, by November of that year, she expressed her intention to quit music, citing frustration with her predominantly white audience. She stated her refusal to continue creating and releasing music online for an audience that she felt did not adequately support her, expressing a desire to move away from performing for such demographics.
