History

Dua Lipa is an English, Albanian, and Kosovar singer, songwriter, and actress who has established herself as one of the leading figures in contemporary pop music. Born on August 22, 1995, she began her professional journey as a model before signing a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records in 2014.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Lipa's self-titled debut studio album was released in 2017, reaching number three on the UK Albums Chart. The record produced several hit singles that defined her early sound, including "Be the One," "IDGAF," and the UK number-one hit "New Rules." Her rapid rise to fame was solidified at the 2018 Brit Awards, where she won for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

In 2018, her collaboration with Calvin Harris, "One Kiss," became a global phenomenon. It reached number one in the UK, became the best-selling song of the year in that territory, and won the Brit Award for Song of the Year. Her success continued into 2019 when she received two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for "Electricity," a collaborative track with Silk City.

Global Stardom and Future Nostalgia

In 2020, Lipa released her second studio album, Future Nostalgia, to widespread critical and commercial acclaim. The album became her first number-one record in the UK and reached the top three in the United States. Its lead single, "Don't Start Now," achieved the longest top-ten run for a British female artist in UK history and was a mainstay on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The Future Nostalgia era produced a string of successful singles, including "Physical," "Break My Heart," and "Levitating." The latter became the top-performing song on the Billboard year-end Hot 100 chart for 2021 and earned a Diamond certification from the RIAA. The album itself was honored with the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album and the Brit Award for British Album of the Year.

Collaborations, Film, and Radical Optimism

Lipa expanded her reach through high-profile collaborations and ventures into cinema. In 2021, she teamed up with Elton John for the "Cold Heart (Pnau remix)," which reached number one in the UK. She made her acting debut in the 2023 film Barbie, also contributing the hit single "Dance the Night" to the movie's soundtrack. In 2024, she appeared in a supporting role in the spy thriller Argylle.

Her third studio album, Radical Optimism, arrived in 2024. The project debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and was supported by the top-ten singles "Houdini," "Training Season," and "Illusion." Throughout her career, Lipa has been recognized for her distinct mezzo-soprano vocal range and her ability to blend disco, 1980s pop, and modern dance music.
