Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, professionally known as Joey Bada$$, emerged from Brooklyn, New York, on January 20, 1995. He is a prominent American rapper, producer, and artist, recognized as a key member of the hip-hop collective Pro Era. With Pro Era, he has contributed to three mixtapes.
Early Career and Mixtape Success
Joey Bada$$ launched his solo career with the critically acclaimed mixtape 1999, released on June 12, 2012. This project featured production from fellow Pro Era members, alongside beats from influential artists like J Dilla and MF DOOM. Following 1999, he released Rejex on September 6, a compilation of early song versions and unreleased tracks. His second mixtape, Summer Knights, arrived on July 1, 2013, building on the momentum of his initial success.
Debut Album and Sophomore Release
On his 20th birthday, January 20, 2015, Joey Bada$$ unveiled his debut studio album, B4.Da.$$. He continued his prolific output with his second studio album, ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$, released on April 7, 2017, under Pro Era Records and Cinematic Music Group. This album was supported by singles such as "Devastated," "Land of the Free," and "Temptation." ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ garnered positive reviews and debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 chart.
The "2000" Era and Continued Artistic Growth
Five years after his sophomore album, Joey Bada$$ released 2000 on July 22, 2022. This marked his third studio album and served as a spiritual successor to his debut mixtape, 1999. The album explored themes of mental health, the loss of his friend Capital Steez and cousin Junior B, and broader life experiences. Leading up to its release, Joey shared several singles, including "Head High," "Survivor's Guilt," and "Zipcodes." 2000 debuted at number 18 on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 22,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. The album was well-received by both fans and critics, seen as a strong continuation of his artistic narrative.
