Rakim Athelston Mayers, known professionally as A$AP Rocky, is a prominent American rapper, producer, fashion designer, and creative director. Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Mayers rose to prominence as a central figure of the hip-hop collective ASAP Mob. His influence extends far beyond music, as he has become a global style icon and a respected figure in the luxury fashion industry.
Early Career and Breakthrough
A$AP Rocky first gained significant attention in 2011 when his single "Peso" leaked online and quickly found a home on New York radio. The track helped define the "cloud rap" subgenre, characterized by its atmospheric production and slowed-down aesthetics. Later that year, he released his debut mixtape, Live. Love. A$AP, to widespread critical acclaim. The project’s success led to a high-profile joint venture deal with Polo Grounds Music and RCA Records.
Mainstream Success and Artistic Evolution
In 2013, Rocky released his debut studio album, Long. Live. A$AP, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album featured the star-studded single "Fuckin' Problems," which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song. He followed this success in 2015 with At. Long. Last. A$AP, another chart-topping project that saw him experimenting with psychedelic sounds and diverse collaborations, including tracks with Rod Stewart and Miguel. His third studio album, Testing (2018), continued this experimental trajectory, exploring avant-garde production and new sonic textures.
Fashion, Business, and AWGE
Outside of his musical output, Mayers is a major figure in the fashion world. In 2014, he founded AWGE, a creative agency and record label that manages his visual projects and facilitates collaborations with global brands. His portfolio includes partnerships with Mercedes-Benz, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, and Dior Homme. His standing in the industry was further solidified when he was named the creative director for the Puma and Formula 1 partnership, as well as for Ray-Ban. In 2025, he reached a pinnacle of fashion recognition by co-chairing the Met Gala.
Film and Cultural Recognition
A$AP Rocky has also pursued an acting career, appearing in films such as Dope (2015) and Monster (2018). His filmography expanded in 2025 with roles in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest and the project If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. Throughout his career, he has received numerous honors, including BET Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, and has been recognized with the Fashion Icon Award and the Virgil Abloh Award for his contributions to culture and design.
