History
José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, professionally known as J Balvin, was born in Medellín, Colombia, on May 7, 1985. His interest in music began at a young age. At 17, he moved to the United States, where he learned English, a language that would later influence his musical style. Upon returning to Medellín, he gained local recognition by performing in various clubs.
Musical Style and Collaborations
J Balvin's music is primarily rooted in reggaeton, but he has explored a range of genres, including electronica, house music, trap, and R&B. He has collaborated with notable artists such as Pharrell Williams, Major Lazer, and Sean Paul. Despite these collaborations with English-speaking artists, J Balvin predominantly sings in Spanish, aiming to introduce Spanish-language music to a global audience. He is also recognized for his distinctive and vibrant fashion sense.
Career Breakthrough and Major Successes
His career breakthrough arrived in 2014 with the single "6 AM," featuring Puerto Rican singer Farruko. This track, along with "Ay Vamos," contributed significantly to the success of his debut album, La Familia. In 2016, he released Energia, which featured hit singles like "Ginza," "Bobo," "Safari," and "Sigo Extranandote."
A pivotal moment came in June 2017 with the release of "Mi Gente," a collaboration with Willy William. The song achieved international acclaim, eventually surpassing one billion views on YouTube. This success preceded the release of his fifth studio album, Vibras. The album, conceived as reggaeton fused with diverse global styles and rhythms, was inspired by the worldwide connection audiences felt with "Mi Gente." Vibras garnered positive reviews, with critics praising its "smooth" and "sensual" reggaeton sound, describing it as a "perfect party playlist" that signaled a shift from the earlier, more aggressive style of reggaeton.
J Balvin also contributed to the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "I Like It," alongside Cardi B and Bad Bunny.
