History

Agnes Caroline Thaarup Obel, born October 28, 1980, is a Danish singer-songwriter. Her debut album, Philharmonics, was released by PIAS Recordings on October 4, 2010, across Denmark, Norway, Germany, and other European territories. By February 2011, Philharmonics achieved gold certification. Her second album, Aventine, followed on September 30, 2013.

Born in Copenhagen into a musical family, Obel began playing the piano at a young age, inspired by her mother's performances of Bartók and Chopin. During her formative years, she also found significant influence in the work of Jan Johansson, whose jazz-infused interpretations of European folk melodies resonated with the young artist.

Obel attended Det frie Gymnasium and later Roskilde University. Her early musical experiences included performing and recording with a band at the age of seven, where she contributed vocals and played bass guitar. She later co-founded the Copenhagen-based band Sohio with Danish musician and producer Elton Theander. Following this collaboration, Obel launched her solo career, culminating in the release of her first album, Philharmonics.

Agnes Obel is known for her self-sufficient approach to music creation, writing, performing, recording, and producing all her material independently. Her artistic influences are diverse, encompassing artists such as Roy Orbison, Joni Mitchell, and PJ Harvey, as well as classical composers like Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Erik Satie.

Obel currently resides in Berlin.
