History
Edward Christopher Sheeran, born February 17, 1991, is an English singer-songwriter who has become one of the most successful and influential figures in contemporary pop music. Raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, Sheeran began writing songs at the age of eleven. Before achieving mainstream success, he spent years performing in small venues and independently releasing several EPs, including the No. 5 Collaborations Project in 2011, which caught the attention of both fans and industry professionals.
Early Career and Breakthrough with +
Sheeran signed with Asylum Records and released his debut studio album, + (Plus), in September 2011. The album was an immediate success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart and featuring his breakout single, "The A Team." This period marked his transition from an independent artist to a global star, earning him Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act in 2012.
Global Success and the Mathematical Era
In 2014, Sheeran released his second album, × (Multiply), which topped charts worldwide and became the second-best-selling album globally in 2015. The record included the hit "Thinking Out Loud," which won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. His momentum continued with the 2017 release of ÷ (Divide), the year's best-selling album globally. The singles "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill" broke multiple records, making him the first artist to debut two songs in the US top 10 in the same week. The subsequent ÷ Tour became the highest-grossing concert tour of all time by August 2019.
Collaborations and Independent Ventures
Sheeran expanded his musical range with the 2019 release of No.6 Collaborations Project, featuring a diverse array of guest artists. He returned to his mathematical series with = (Equals) in 2021 and the introspective − (Subtract) in early 2023. Later in 2023, he released Autumn Variations under his own label, Gingerbread Man Records, signaling a move toward more independent creative control. His eighth studio album, Play, followed in September 2025.
Legacy and Achievements
With more than 200 million records sold worldwide, Ed Sheeran is among the best-selling music artists in history. He was named the Official Charts Company’s artist of the decade for his dominance in the UK charts during the 2010s. Beyond his recording career, Sheeran is a member of the National Youth Theatre and has appeared in films such as Yesterday. In 2025, his cultural impact was further recognized when Time magazine included him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
