History
Wiz Khalifa, born Cameron Jibril Thomaz on September 8, 1987, is an influential American rapper, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Though born in Minot, North Dakota, he became synonymous with the music scene in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His stage name is a combination of "Khalifa," an Arabic word meaning "successor," and a shortened version of "wisdom," a nod to his childhood nickname, "Wizard."
Early Life and Nomadic Roots
As the child of parents serving in the military, Khalifa experienced a nomadic upbringing. Before settling in Pittsburgh at the age of two, and later returning there as a teenager, he lived in diverse locations including Germany, Japan, England, and several U.S. states such as Georgia and Oklahoma. This constant movement forced him to adapt quickly to new environments, a process that eventually informed his songwriting and broadened his perspective on the world.
By the age of 14, Khalifa began recording his own music. His distinct voice and lyrical style caught the attention of local producers, leading him to ID Labs, where he began collaborating with Eric Dan. This connection eventually led to a partnership with Benjy Grinberg of Rostrum Records, who signed Khalifa to the label in 2002.
Rise to Prominence
Khalifa’s professional career gained momentum with the release of his first mixtape, Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania, in 2005, followed by his debut street album, Show and Prove, in 2006. During this period, he also formed Taylor Gang, a creative collective and crew named after the Chuck Taylor Converse shoes he and his friends frequently wore.
After a brief and frustrating stint with Warner Bros. Records, which saw his planned debut label album shelved, Khalifa returned to his independent roots. In 2009, he released Deal or No Deal, which reached the top of the iTunes hip-hop charts. His momentum surged further in 2010 with the release of the critically acclaimed mixtape Kush and Orange Juice, a project that established him as a major figure in the "blog era" of hip-hop and led to a major label deal with Atlantic Records.
Mainstream Superstardom and "Black and Yellow"
Khalifa achieved global stardom with his first Atlantic single, "Black and Yellow." An anthem dedicated to the colors of Pittsburgh’s professional sports teams, the track peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. His major-label debut, Rolling Papers, followed in March 2011, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200. The album solidified his commercial appeal and was followed by O.N.I.F.C. in 2012, which featured the hit singles "Work Hard, Play Hard" and "Remember You."
In 2014, Khalifa released Blacc Hollywood, which debuted at number one and featured the popular track "We Dem Boyz." The album showcased collaborations with a wide range of artists, including Juicy J and Ty Dolla $ign, further expanding his influence across the genre.
"See You Again" and Continued Career
In 2015, Khalifa reached a new level of commercial success with "See You Again," a collaboration with Charlie Puth recorded for the Furious 7 soundtrack as a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker. The song became a massive international hit, spending 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the most-viewed videos in YouTube history.
Following this success, Khalifa continued to release a steady stream of projects, including the studio albums Khalifa (2016) and Rolling Papers 2 (2018). He has remained a prolific collaborator, working with artists across various genres, from Fall Out Boy to Travis Barker. In 2020, he released the project The Saga of Wiz Khalifa, featuring appearances by Tyga and Logic.
Television and Media Appearances
Beyond music, Khalifa has maintained a presence in popular media. In 2021, he competed in the fifth season of the reality singing competition The Masked Singer as "Chameleon," where he showcased his versatility and ultimately finished in third place. He also remains a prominent figure in the cannabis industry, launching his own brand and lifestyle products that align with his long-standing public persona.
