History
DJ Khaled (born Khaled Mohammed Khaled) is an American record producer, radio personality, and DJ who has become one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary hip hop. Known for his energetic persona, motivational catchphrases, and maximalist production style, Khaled has built a career as a premier curator, bringing together superstar artists for massive commercial hits.
Early Career and Radio Origins
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Palestinian immigrant parents, Khaled first established himself in the music industry during the 1990s. He gained initial recognition as a radio host for Miami's 99 Jamz, where his influence in the Florida hip hop scene grew rapidly. This exposure led him to join Fat Joe's hip hop collective, Terror Squad, serving as a DJ for live performances and contributing as a producer to the group's projects.
Rise to Commercial Success
In 2006, Khaled released his debut studio album, Listennn... the Album. He solidified his presence in the industry with 2007's We the Best, which featured the hit single "I'm So Hood." His ability to assemble high-profile collaborators became his signature, exemplified by the 2010 anthem "All I Do Is Win." Featuring T-Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and Rick Ross, the track was certified triple platinum and remains a staple in sports and pop culture.
Chart-Topping Dominance
Khaled's commercial momentum reached a new peak with the release of Major Key in 2016. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. This success was followed by Grateful (2017), which also reached the top of the charts and produced the global hits "I'm the One" and "Wild Thoughts."
In 2019, Khaled released Father of Asahd, which included the track "Higher" featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend. The song earned Khaled his first Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance. He continued his streak of number-one albums with Khaled Khaled (2021) and God Did (2022). The title track of God Did received significant critical acclaim and three nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
Business Ventures and Media
Beyond his work as a producer, Khaled is the founder of We the Best Music Group, a record label that has distributed his own releases and signed artists such as Ace Hood and Mavado. He is also a successful author; his book The Keys appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list. Khaled has further expanded his brand into film, appearing in Bad Boys for Life (2020), Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024), and providing voice work for the animated film Spies in Disguise (2019).
