Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom is an American singer, songwriter, harpist, and actress. Born and raised in Northern California, she received classical training on the harp during her youth. Newsom initially launched her music career as a keyboardist in the San Francisco indie band The Pleased.

Early Career and Debut Album

After self-releasing two EPs in 2002, Newsom signed with the independent label Drag City. Her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was released in 2004 to widespread critical praise, establishing an underground following for the artist.

Breakthrough and Subsequent Releases

Newsom achieved broader recognition with the release of her 2006 album, Ys, which reached number 134 on the Billboard 200 chart. She continued to release acclaimed work with Have One on Me in 2010 and Divers in 2015. The latter became her best-selling album to date.

Musical Style and Acting Career

Critics have frequently highlighted Newsom's distinctive musical approach, often described as psychedelic folk, and her signature use of the harp. Beyond her music, Newsom has also engaged in acting, with appearances in the television series Portlandia and the 2014 film Inherent Vice.
