Immortal Technique: A Voice of Political Resistance
Felipe Andres Coronel, known professionally as Immortal Technique, was born in Lima, Peru, on February 19, 1978. He relocated to Harlem, New York, with his family in 1980. A prominent figure in underground hip-hop, Immortal Technique is recognized for his politically charged lyrics that critically examine global politics, class struggle, poverty, religion, government, and institutional racism, often from a socialist perspective.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Coronel, who is of African-Peruvian descent, spent his formative years in Harlem. His early life was marked by legal troubles, leading to multiple arrests and a year-long incarceration for assault-related offenses. During his time in jail, he honed his lyrical abilities. After his release, he attended Baruch College, studying political science. Unable to secure stable employment, he worked in New York's restaurant industry while simultaneously developing his reputation as a formidable battle rapper. His victories in underground freestyle competitions, including Rocksteady Anniversary and Braggin Rites, solidified his standing in the New York hip-hop scene.
Independent Releases and Critical Acclaim
In 2001, Immortal Technique independently released his debut album, Revolutionary Vol. 1, funded by his rap battle earnings. The album featured the now-classic track "Dance With The Devil." In November 2002, The Source magazine recognized him in its "Unsigned Hype" column. His second album, Revolutionary Vol. 2, followed in September 2003. That same year, The Source awarded him a "Hip Hop Quotable" for his song "Industrial Revolution," a rare distinction for an unsigned artist. The debut album, Revolutionary Vol. 1, was later re-released by Viper Records in 2004 and Babygrande Records in 2005 to reach a broader audience. The track "Point of No Return" from Revolutionary Vol. 2 gained further recognition when it was used as Rashad Evans' entrance theme at UFC 88.
Activism and Further Projects
Between 2005 and 2007, Immortal Technique worked on The Middle Passage and The 3rd World, completing his initial album series. Beyond his music, he has been actively involved in social and political activism. He has toured extensively, spoken to incarcerated youth, supported immigrant rights, and raised funds for overseas children's hospitals. He has also invested in farmland in Latin America and established a writing grant program for high school students, demonstrating a commitment to community development and empowerment.
