History

Kool G Rap, born Nathaniel Wilson on July 20, 1968, is an American rapper from Queens, New York. He first emerged in the 1980s as part of the influential Juice Crew, though his early career saw limited commercial impact.

Early Career and Rise to Lyrical Acclaim

In 1986, Kool G Rap began a significant collaboration with DJ Polo. Together, they released several underground singles, including the notable tracks "It's a Demo" and "I'm Fly." Their subsequent releases, "Streets of New York" and "Road to the Riches," gained considerable airplay on Yo! MTV Raps, solidifying G Rap's reputation as a master storyteller and one of New York's premier lyricists. His ability to craft vivid, gritty narratives within a single song was often compared to that of Rakim. Despite growing recognition, Kool G Rap did not achieve the mainstream crossover success of fellow Juice Crew members like Biz Markie or Big Daddy Kane.

Solo Career and Comeback

The mid-1990s marked the beginning of Kool G Rap's solo career with the release of his album 4, 5, 6. While this and subsequent albums garnered some attention, they did not achieve widespread critical or commercial success. Seeking new avenues, G Rap began collaborating with other artists. A significant moment in his career came with his signing to Rawkus Records, leading to the release of The Giancana Story in 2002. The album, which G Rap stated inspired the "G" in his name through the song "Drama," was critically acclaimed but did not translate into commercial success.

Later Releases

In 2008, Kool G Rap released Half a Klip on Chinga Chang Records, featuring production from prominent figures like DJ Premier and Marley Marl. His 2011 album, Riches, Royalty, Respect, continued to showcase his distinctive style and exceptional lyricism.
