History

Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., known professionally as T.I. and his alter ego T.I.P., is a Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, actor, and entrepreneur. Born on September 25, 1980, in the Bankhead neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, he has become one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, often credited as a pioneer of the trap music subgenre. He is also the co-founder of Grand Hustle Records.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Raised primarily by his grandparents in Atlanta, Harris began rapping at a young age. He originally went by the moniker "Tip," a nickname given to him by his paternal great-grandfather. When he signed with Arista Records subsidiary LaFace Records in 2001, he shortened his name to T.I. out of respect for his labelmate, Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest.

His debut studio album, I'm Serious, was released in 2001. While it did not achieve immediate commercial success, it established his presence in the Southern rap scene and led to the formation of his own label, Grand Hustle. He later earned the nickname "Rubber Band Man," which he explained referred to the practice of using rubber bands to denote large sums of cash.

Rise to Commercial Dominance

T.I.'s career saw a massive surge with the release of Trap Muzik in 2003, followed by Urban Legend in 2004. These projects solidified his reputation as the "King of the South." His 2006 album, King, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit single "What You Know," which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

He continued his commercial streak with the concept album T.I. vs. T.I.P. (2007) and the multi-platinum Paper Trail (2008). The latter became his most successful project to date, featuring chart-topping singles such as "Whatever You Like" and "Live Your Life" featuring Rihanna. By late 2008, T.I. had secured nine Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles, including his appearance on Justin Timberlake's "My Love."

Production and Business Ventures

Beyond his solo career, T.I. has been a prolific producer and executive. He served as a co-executive producer for B.G. and has produced tracks for a wide range of artists, including Mariah Carey, Rick Ross, Cassidy, Maino, and Young Dro. His business acumen extended to the film industry, where he executive produced the soundtrack for the Academy Award-winning film Hustle & Flow and launched the careers of several artists through Grand Hustle Records.

T.I. has been in a long-term relationship with former Xscape member Tameka "Tiny" Cottle since 2001. The couple has two sons together, King and Major Harris, and T.I. has three other children—Domani, Messiah, and Deyjah—from previous relationships.

His career has also been marked by significant legal hurdles. In 2009, he was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison following felony weapons charges. His subsequent release involved strict conditions, including financial audits and random property searches. Despite these setbacks, he continued to release music, including the 2010 album No Mercy and the 2012 project Trouble Man: Heavy Is the Head.
