History

Rick Astley (born February 6, 1966) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician, best known for his work in the dance-pop genre. Born in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England, Astley began his music career in the mid-1980s. He currently resides in Richmond, Surrey, with his wife, Lene Bausager, and their daughter.

Astley's early musical endeavors included performing with the soul band FBI on the club circuit. His talent was recognized by record producer Pete Waterman, who invited him to London to work at PWL recording studios. Under the guidance of the production trio Stock Aitken Waterman, Astley honed his recording skills, reportedly starting as an assistant at the studio. During his rise to fame, many listeners initially assumed Astley was a Black artist due to his distinctive vocal style, a misconception that persisted even after his visual debut.

Early Success and "Never Gonna Give You Up"

While his first single was a collaboration titled "When You Gonna" credited to Rick & Lisa, Astley's solo career took off with the 1987 release of "Never Gonna Give You Up." The song achieved immediate and significant success, topping the UK charts for five weeks and becoming the best-selling single of the year. This marked the beginning of a string of hits, with Astley securing over 13 Top 30 singles worldwide.

His debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody, also reached number one in the UK. The album spawned further hit singles, including the title track and a cover of Nat King Cole's "When I Fall In Love."

International Breakthrough and Career Evolution

In 1988, "Never Gonna Give You Up" achieved chart success in the United States, reaching number one. This was followed by another US number one single, "Together Forever." By the end of the decade, Astley had moved on from Stock Aitken Waterman. He continued to achieve success, with the 1991 ballad "Cry For Help" reaching the Top 10 in both the UK and the US. This track featured a gospel choir arranged by Andraé Crouch.

Astley's 1993 album, Body & Soul, saw moderate success on the adult contemporary charts in the US, with singles like "The Ones You Love" and "Hopelessly" performing well. Following this period, Astley largely stepped away from the public eye for much of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Later Career and Internet Phenomenon

After a nearly decade-long hiatus from album releases, Astley returned in 2002 with Keep It Turned On. The album included the single "Sleeping," which gained traction in clubs thanks to remixes by Todd Terry. In 2005, he released Portrait, an album featuring covers of classic soul standards.

In 2006, Astley withdrew from a BBC television competition, Just the Two of Us, due to his partner's Academy Award nomination for the film "Cashback." This led to some public criticism, though the reason for his withdrawal was later clarified.

The song "Never Gonna Give You Up" experienced a resurgence in popularity in the late 2000s, becoming the basis of the internet meme known as "Rickrolling." This viral phenomenon led to increased publicity and the release of a greatest hits album by his former record company. In recognition of his enduring appeal, Astley received the Best Act Ever award at the MTV EMAs in 2008 and participated in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, famously "Rickrolling" American television audiences.
