History

N.W.A

N.W.A, an abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes, was a pioneering American hip hop group formed in Compton, California, in 1986. Widely recognized as a foundational act in the gangsta rap subgenre, the group is often credited with significantly shaping the history of hip hop. Active until 1991, N.W.A faced considerable controversy due to the explicit nature of their lyrics, leading to bans from numerous mainstream U.S. radio stations. Despite these challenges, the group achieved substantial commercial success, selling over 10 million CDs in the United States alone.

Formation and Key Releases

The original lineup featured Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and MC Ren. Arabian Prince departed in 1989 to pursue a solo career, followed by Ice Cube's exit in December of the same year due to royalty disputes. Several members would later achieve platinum-selling success as solo artists in the 1990s.

N.W.A's debut album, Straight Outta Compton, released in 1988, is considered a landmark recording that ushered in a new era of gangsta rap. Its innovative production and socially charged lyrical content were revolutionary within the genre. The group also released the compilation album N.W.A. and the Posse in 1987, the EP 100 Miles and Runnin' in 1990, and their second studio album, Niggaz4Life, in 1991, shortly before disbanding.

A Greatest Hits compilation was released in 1996, with Straight Outta Compton and Greatest Hits being reissued with additional tracks in 2002 and 2003, respectively. In recognition of their impact, Rolling Stone ranked N.W.A number 83 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."
