Die Fantastischen Vier: Pioneers of German Hip Hop

Die Fantastischen Vier, often abbreviated as Fanta 4, is a seminal German hip hop group hailing from Stuttgart. The group comprises Michael Schmidt (Smudo), Andreas Rieke, Thomas Dürr, and Michi Beck. Alongside Advanced Chemistry, they are recognized as one of the earliest acts to popularize rapping in the German language.

Origins and Early Success

The band's roots trace back to the mid-1980s when Rieke and Schmidt formed the group Terminal Team. Dürr and Beck joined in 1989, and the quartet soon rebranded as Die Fantastischen Vier. They were instrumental in making German hip hop, which they termed "Deutschen Sprechgesang" (German spoken-song), a mainstream phenomenon in Germany. While other German hip hop artists predated them, Die Fantastischen Vier achieved the first significant chart success with their 1992 single "Die da?!". The track, from their album 4 gewinnt, reached No. 2 in Germany and topped the charts in Austria and Switzerland.

Artistic Evolution and Independence

Following a trip to Los Angeles in the late 1980s, the group recognized a disconnect between the socio-economic realities of American urban life and their own German context. This realization prompted them to steer clear of typical American gangsta rap clichés, opting instead for a more nuanced and often humorous approach. As their career progressed, their music evolved, incorporating more serious and philosophical themes into their subsequent albums.

Beyond their group efforts, members Thomas D, Hausmarke, and Ypsilon also pursued successful solo careers. The band also hosted their own weekly television show, "Die 4. Dimension," named after their third album, which aired on the German pay-TV channel Premiere in 1993 and 1994. In 1996, Die Fantastischen Vier announced the launch of their own record label, Four Music, at the Popkomm trade fair in Cologne. Initially based in Stuttgart, the label's headquarters later relocated to Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Chart Dominance and Notable Releases

The group's seventh album, 4:99, released in 1999 on their own label, spawned four singles, including the No. 2 hit "MfG." Notably, three singles were released simultaneously, a first for the German music industry, with each track associated with an individual member: "Le Smou" (Smudo), "Michi Beck in Hell" (Michi Beck), and "Buenos Dias Messias" (Thomas D).

In late September 2004, Die Fantastischen Vier released the album Viel, accompanied by their most successful and best-attended tour to date. The following year, 2005, marked the release of their first greatest-hits compilation, Best of 1990-2005, featuring all their singles, additional tracks, and rare footage from their early days as Terminal Team, when they performed in English.

Their number-one album Fornika was released on April 7, 2007, preceded by the single "Ernten was wir säen" (Reap what we sow). This song was later made available as a download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock in December 2007 and was covered by the rock band Oomph! in 2009.

Recent Triumphs and Cultural Impact

Die Fantastischen Vier also lent their voices to the German dub of the Madagascar film series, with Michi Beck as Skipper, Thomas D as Kowalski, Andreas Rieke as Rico, and Michael Bernd Schmidt as Private.

In 2010, their album Für dich immer noch Fanta Sie once again topped the German charts. The 2014 release of Rekord celebrated the band's 25th anniversary and also reached the number one position in Germany. In 2018, the single "Zusammen," featuring Clueso, from the album Captain Fantastic, was selected as the official song for the 2018 FIFA World Cup by the German public broadcaster Das Erste.
