Nick Drake (1948–1974) was a British singer-songwriter whose brief career and three studio albums became a cornerstone of modern folk music. Known for his hushed, melancholic vocals and intricate fingerstyle guitar technique, Drake remained largely unknown to the general public during his lifetime. However, in the decades following his death, his work has achieved legendary status, influencing generations of musicians across various genres.

Born Nicholas Rodney Drake in Rangoon, Burma, he moved with his family to Tanworth-in-Arden, Warwickshire, at a young age. Drake was raised in a musical household; his mother, Molly Drake, was a songwriter whose style influenced his own. He showed early musical promise, learning piano and clarinet at Marlborough College before picking up the guitar. While studying English literature at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, Drake began performing in local clubs and coffee houses, drawing inspiration from the British folk scene and American artists like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs.
