History

Artis Leon Ivey Jr., known professionally as Coolio, was a prominent American rapper and actor who became one of the most recognizable figures in hip-hop during the mid-1990s. Born on August 1, 1963, and passing away on September 28, 2022, he bridged the gap between the gritty sounds of West Coast gangsta rap and mainstream pop appeal.

Early Career and WC and the Maad Circle

Coolio began his musical journey in the Los Angeles rap scene. Before finding solo stardom, he was a member of the group WC and the Maad Circle, contributing to their 1991 debut album, Ain't a Damn Thing Changed. This period helped establish his reputation in the California scene before he signed with Tommy Boy Records to launch his career as a solo artist.

Solo Breakthrough and Mainstream Success

In 1994, Coolio released his debut solo album, It Takes a Thief. The record was fueled by the massive success of the single "Fantastic Voyage," which showcased his ability to blend street narratives with infectious, funk-driven production. The track reached the top of the charts and set the stage for his global breakthrough.

The pinnacle of his career arrived in 1995 with the release of "Gangsta's Paradise." Featured on the soundtrack for the film Dangerous Minds and his own sophomore album of the same name, the song became a worldwide phenomenon. It earned Coolio a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance and remains one of the best-selling rap singles of all time. The album Gangsta's Paradise further solidified his status with additional hits like "1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)" and "Too Hot."

Later Projects and Cultural Impact

Coolio continued his run of commercial success with his 1997 album My Soul, which featured the poignant hit "C U When U Get There." Beyond his studio albums, he became a fixture in popular culture, famously writing and performing "Aw, Here It Goes!", the opening theme song for the long-running Nickelodeon sitcom Kenan & Kel.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Coolio transitioned into independent music production and explored diverse interests outside of the recording studio. He became a noted culinary personality, launching the web series Cookin' with Coolio and publishing a successful cookbook. Throughout his career, he maintained a unique position in the industry as an artist who could balance the realities of street life with a sense of humor and accessible storytelling.
