Biz Markie (1964-2021) was an influential East Coast hip-hop artist, DJ, and globally recognized human beatboxer. He rose to prominence in the 1980s and became widely known for his humorous singles, including the enduring hits "Just a Friend" and "Pickin' Boogers," as well as the pre-MTV era track "Vapors." Often referred to as "The Clown Prince of Hip-Hop," Biz Markie carved out a unique niche with his comedic approach and distinctive vocal style.
Legal Challenges and Career Evolution
Biz Markie's career faced a significant hurdle in 1992 when a lawsuit was filed over his song "Alone Again." The plaintiff, Gilbert O'Sullivan, alleged an unauthorized sample of his hit "Alone Again (Naturally)" was used. This legal battle impacted Biz Markie's career, leading him to step back from the intense spotlight for much of the 1990s. During this period, he focused on honing his DJ skills, even developing the unique ability to scratch records using his stomach. He also contributed to projects with artists such as Len, Will Smith, and the Beastie Boys.
Later Career and Media Appearances
Resuming his recording career in 2003, Biz Markie continued to engage with his audience. From 2008, he became a familiar face on the popular children's television show "Yo Gabba Gabba," where he hosted "Biz's Beat of the Day," encouraging young viewers to participate in beatboxing. His television and film credits are extensive, including appearances in "Men in Black II," "The Andy Milonakis Show," "Nick Cannon's Wild 'n Out," "In Living Color," "Fastlane," and a memorable RadioShack commercial. In 2005, he also participated in and won VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club."
Biz Markie passed away on July 16, 2021, at the age of 57, leaving behind a legacy of innovative music and memorable performances.
