Martin Schlumpf, born on 3 December 1947 in Aarau, began his music studies in Zurich (clarinet, piano, conducting, theory and composition) in 1968. 1974 followed studies with Boris Blacher in Berlin. Since 1977 he has been a professor of music theory at the Zurich University of the Arts, and since 1991 he has also been working as a group moderator. Since the end of the 1980s, Martin Schlumpf has been active in the intersection between composition and improvisation in a new "postmodern" environment with a strong focus on the rhythm.
