Biography Nicky Prince

Nicky Prince is a UK Soul/Funk Singer and Songwriter inspired by artists like Omar and Nikka Costa. Nicky is what has been described as a ‘seasoned’ performer with real stage presence and recently went down a storm at The Jazz Cafe, The Pigalle, The Stables and Soul-D-Out at The Cobden Club with her raw soulful vocals and jazz-funk sound!

2009 was quite a year! Nicky had a sell-out Stables gig in February and also performed at the Solar Radio Valentines Event with other featured artists Jonas, David Mensah and Vivienne McKone. She supported the Three Degrees in July and went down an absolute storm at the Cobdon Club as a featured artist on Noel McKoy’s album launch night in August. Nicky also recently supported Nate James at the Jazz Cafe. She is currently a resident artist at The Living Room, hub:mk but also completed a mini tour of the Living Room venues in the UK back in August to promote her EP.

Nicky’s brand new EP ‘See What You Mean’ is now on sale!! It contains 5 tracks, with catchy soulful and funky melodies, including a beautiful interpretation of Nina Simone’s –‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ - raw and emotional! Incidentally, the garage track ‘Neighbourhood’ by Zed Bias which featured Nicky on has been remixed and has been re-released! BACKGROUND:

Brought up on a Hi-Fi diet of Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayres, James Brown and Gladys Knight - not to mention some of the more eclectic strains of Sly & The Family Stone, Parliament and Funkadelic - it was clear to Nicky Prince from infanthood that soul, in all its glorious incarnations, is where the heart is.

Dancing was the first foray into a life about to be lost in music. By the age of 18, singing became her primary mode of expression but you’ll quickly discover that dance is very much still a part of her energetic live performances!

She was barely out of her teens before she was recording, performing, writing, acting and arranging in so many different permutations that we could be here ‘till the cows ‘bring it on home’ before we’re done ticking them off. In short, the Nicky Prince story is one with plot-points such as Glastonbury, Radio 1, The UK Top 20 Charts, Eurovision, The Jazz Café, XL recordings; support for Roy Ayres, Courtney Pine, The Three Degrees and sharing a stage with the late great man himself James Brown.

Nicky is now focusing on her solo career, singing material that was her childhood inspiration, and was spoon-fed to her with the brussels! Reminiscing the old tunes, and getting together with her band, reignited Nicky's "funk-fire" and prompted her pronouncement that she was "going back to her roots" with the new band and an exciting fresh groove. Her songs and performance show the hardcore emotion and passion that flow through her veins. With real stage presence that is hard to come by these days, this always leaves you wanting more!

Whether live, on record or in session, the voice of Nicky Prince evokes the kind of ‘down home gravitas’ you might expect to encounter in Chicago, Detroit or New York - certainly a surprise in the East Anglia region of the UK.
