History Die Pretty
When Sarah and Sal met guitar player Tommy Cai (Chinese) and drummer Angelo Merendino (Italian) after posting an add on Craigslist, they had a real melting pot of a band. It was exciting and in 2008 “Die Pretty” the Alt/Punk band was born.
Their first album “Bittersweet” was picked up by an indie label Unconform Records, out of Frankfurt Germany in 2009. Having a debut record out in Europe was thrilling; it quickly sold 900 copies before the label sadly folded. They continued to write songs, using New York City as their inspiration. Living in the city certainly provided a canvas of life experiences to work with. With appearances on NY INK (TLC 2012) and Modeling assignments for INKED Mag (2011), living the daily grind, working day jobs and rehearsing at night, “Die Pretty” became thick skinned. They played the top live venues in NYC regularly…including Arlene’s Grocery and Gramercy Theatre to enthusiastic fans and it was inspiring.
During these seminal years their drummer Angelo was dealing with personal demons, as his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2008 and was receiving chemotherapy. He was constantly struggling to stay active in his other passion, “Die Pretty,” and still remain in control of his personal life.
They recorded “Battle Over Brooklyn”. It was their way of telling the world that they were not willing to give in but were ready to fight!! The 3 song EP received amazing reviews from magazines and blogs in 2010 - 2011. Playing gigs in support of their EP, “Die Pretty” was noticed and named one of the “TOP 100 LIVE UNSIGNED BANDS of 2011” by Music Connection Magazine. “Die Pretty” quickly went back into the studio to work with Producer/Engineer, Oliver Straus, in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
“Die Pretty” will release their 20-song album, CD & Digital, nationally on May 8th, 2012 entitled “Beyond Fate” to brick & mortar stores thru MVD. The album is dedicated to Angelo and Jennifer. They hope that this will be their breakthrough release. The first single off the release is “Medicated Nation” (Video Available), the struggle of so many people needing meds to live a somewhat normal life. “Die Pretty” hope that the memory and struggle of the last few years won’t be forgotten and their inspiration within the music will live forever for all to enjoy as much as they did.
